Bruny Island is an island off an island…..off an island. Actually it has the potential to be an island off an island off an island off an island at times and…..I digress. We’ve lived in Tassie for the best part of ten months now and until last week, I’d never had the chance to visit Bruny. Today I enjoyed my second visit in a week and it was nothing short of EPIC!
Regular readers of the blog and my Instagram account will know I’ve had the immense pleasure of attending a number of Instameets, since moving to Tasmania. For the first Instameet of 2016, the fantastic humans at Hobart & Beyond and Discover Tasmania put on one hell of a show. More than 30 photographers got to enjoy one of, if not THE best experience in Tasmania, a Pennicott Wilderness Cruise around the rocky coast of Bruny Island.
We met at their Hobart HQ this morning and after a quick briefing and chat, we boarded our bus to Kettering. From here it was a pleasant trip across to Bruny on the ferry and onwards to our first pitstop at the Neck Lookout. It’s possible to see Fairy Penguins on the beach at dusk but alas they are all still out on the water during the day (Oh well, guess will just have to make a third trip *sighs*).
The photos in the post are from both trips and include some from the very south of the island, where one of Australia’s oldest lighthouses keeps watch over some stunning scenery.
We hopped back on board the bus to drive to the main event. The guys at Pennicott had a delicious lunch prepared for us when we arrived at their Bruny HQ at Adventure Bay. After wolfing down the tasty pumpkin soup and salmon sandwich it was time for our cruise. The word “cruise” can be used a little lightly here as the boat trip is bumpy…AND IT’S AWESOME!!!! Everyone on board was giggling like a child every time we went over one of the larger swells. The boat would soar into the air for what felt like an eternity before pounding back down in the trough, it was the best of fun.
And then there was the scenery! and the Dolphins! and the Seals! and the Albatross!…….and the Tim Tams!! Every minute of the trip was just amazing and I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences of my life. Our guide/bus driver/boat captain was an absolute hoot whilst being extremely knowledgeable of the history (both man-made and natural) of Bruny Island.

Great photos James.
